Similar to watercolor in that it can be re-wetted, dries to a matte finish, and the paint can become infused with its paper support Gouache paintings are similar to acrylic or oil in that it is normally used in an opaque painting style and can form a superficial layer.

Gouache paints are usually mixed with water to achieve the desired working properties and to control the opacity when dry.  It is used most consistently by commercial artists for posters, illustrations, comics, and other design work, however in the past decade it has become very popular with calligraphy & lettering.
